Odeceixe
We hope this page about Odeceixe in Aljezur Region is useful for our Holiday rentals seekers.
Odeceixe was founded by the Moors who then dominated the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
In this parish the janeiras and Reis are still sung in the Christmas season and on Easter Monday people go to the beach to break the folar.
During the “popular saints” the tradition of jumping the bonfires is maintained.
The village is included in the coastal strip of territory where the Mirense culture developed (5 to 8 thousand years BC) that was located between the River Mira, in the municipality of Odemira and Burgau, part of the municipality of Vila do Bishop.
The Mirenses were nomadic people, and being hunters and gatherers they were not dedicated to agriculture.
They used their axes to collect shellfish from the cliffs and to dig the land in search of tubers. Hunting completed his diet.
The coastal area between Burgau, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, and the River Mira, where this parish is located, was the stage for the development of Cultura Mirense, a people of nomadic nature, whose traces date from 8 to 5,000 years before the Birth of Christ, with numerous archaeological remains here to attest to its presence in the region.
The parish’s focal point is the village of Odeceixe, Algarve, which is located along a hill, next to Ribeira de Seixe. The streets are mostly narrow, flanked by buildings that are normally whitewashed.
It is located next to the border with the municipality of Odemira, in Baixo Alentejo, and the road access is through the Estrada Nacional 120, which passes next to the town.
It was elevated to town on 12 July 2001, being the first coastal town in the Algarve.
