After the Olhanense revolt against the French (between 16 and 19 June 1808), some fishermen from the place of Olhão offered to go to Brazil to divulge to the future D. João VI the news of the restoration of the Kingdom of the Algarve. The Bom Sucesso caique, as the vessel was called, reached its destination on September 22, 1808,
surprising the prince regent himself, who rewarded and decorated Olhanenses with different positions.
But on the 15th of November, by way of a charter, the same monarch granted the noble title of VILLAGE OF OLHÃO DA RESTAURAÇÃO to Olhão, equating it with the “most notable villages in the Kingdom”.
In this way the small village,
which would have no more than five thousand inhabitants, managed to separate from Faro and become a municipality.
On December 21st, finally, he created the title of Marquis of Olhão.
