With the valuable contribution of archeology, it is known today that the presence of man in the Municipality of Loulé dates back to the Ancient Paleolithic. In the following millennia, in the period of the Age of Metals, the incursion of the peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean intensified, that progressively penetrate in the Southwest Peninsular,
culminating in the arrival of the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians. These founded the first factories on the seafront of the territory of the current municipality, promoting fishing, prospecting for metallurgy and commercial activity.

From the middle of the second century BC, after the Second Punic War,
the Romans give new impetus to economic activities by developing the canning industry, agriculture and mining of copper and iron.

With the conquest of Muslims, in the 8th century, the medieval city was born, which will generate the current historic city. Al-‘Ulya ‘(Loulé) is described to us, for the first time,
on the eve of the Christian reconquest, in the Arab chronicles of Ibne Saíde and Abd Aluhaid, as a small fortified and prosperous Almedina (City), belonging to the Kingdom of Niebla, under the command of Taifa Ibne Mafom.

In 1249, Dom Afonso III assisted by D. Paio Peres Correia, Knight and Master of the Order of Santiago,
conquers the Castle of Loulé to the “Moors”, making its full integration in the Portuguese Crown, at the moment when it grants the first charter to “Vila” in 1266.

During the “Discoveries and Maritime Expansion” period, the Algarve region, namely Loulé, begins a new cycle of economic growth.
Commercial activity was revived.

In the first half of the century, during the reign of Dom João V, Portugal experienced a climate of economic prosperity sustained by the gold of Brazil. Taking advantage of the artistic and cultural activity inserted in the spirit of the Baroque,
the interior of the churches and chapels of the village are enriched and enhanced with excellent altarpieces in gilded wood and tiles, works that were executed by the best craftsmen in the region and factories in the country. The 1755 earthquake destroyed much of the town of Loulé.

The great evolution of transport,
with the construction of the railway line in the Algarve in 1887 and the development of the means of communication, together contributed to the profound change in the way of life of the population. However, some infrastructures and basic equipment only during the twentieth century began to be considered as a priority.

The growth of the city was supported by a further improvement in communication routes and mining, which attracted more people to Loulé, which translated into an accelerated activity of civil construction throughout the municipality.
