Paderne
We hope this page about Paderne in Albufeira Region is useful for our Holiday rentals seekers.
Paderne, or as it was previously called, Paderna, is according to 17th century authors, a very old toponym, perhaps of Portuguese origin that meant rough, rude, hard and intractable. Estácio da Veiga discovered underground galleries in the village itself, which he attributed to prehistoric peoples, although a local tradition indicated them as Moorish granaries or granaries. They would be cupriferous mining galleries, later used by the people who successively dominated the Algarve coast (Phoenicians, Romans, Goths and Arabs). At about 2 km is the Castle of Paderne, built in the sec. XIII, in the middle of the Almohad period (political-religious sect that appeared at the end of the 12th century among Muslims in North Africa), and that defended not only the ancient settlement of Paderne but also controlled an important passage between the barrocal and the Algarve coast. Built in mud, it has an entrance defended by an advanced tower or albarrã and barbacã. The castle was to be taken prematurely by Christians in the reign of D. Sancho I, falling back under Muslim rule, remaining in it until 1248, date when the knights of the Order of Santiago, led by their master D. Paio Peres Correia, definitely conquers you.
By royal letter of January 1, 1305, D. Dinis donated the castle with the patronage of the church to the master of Avis, D. Lourenço Anes. The village of Albufeira also belonged to the same Order of Avis. Only in 1575 is the first reference to the parish headquarters located in the current Paderne, assuming that the change of the old headquarters, in the castle hermitage, occurred around 1500. The new church continued to be a priority in the order of Avis however, the primitive settlement fell into decay, then accelerated with the 1755 earthquake, almost completely destroying the old fortress. The castle of Paderne was purchased in 1997 by the Portuguese Institute of Architectural Heritage.
