Pereiro is a peaceful fishing village in the beautiful municipality of Alcoutim, located in a mountain area of great beauty, bathed by the rivers of Vascão and Foupana, already very close to the border with the Alentejo, it is a symbol of another “Algarve”, distant golden beaches with crystal clear waters,
but full of charm and with a lot to see and know.
The village is characterized by its picturesque white houses distributed in the irregular streets of rural and popular layout with a mountain feature, typical of this area of the Algarve Barrocal.
It is thought that this is a territory of ancient human occupation, already used by the Romans for the extraction of ores,
so important to your empire.
Its place name will come from the many wild Pereiros that are still found in the region today.
Pereiro is proud of its Mother Church of São Marcos, dating from the 16th century, owner of an enviable wealth, and also of the very interesting Museum Center in Fonte Zambujo, which it complements with those of Martilongo,
Regions and Cowboys. This group focuses on the region’s ethnology, full of rurality and ancient knowledge.
