Santa Luzia

We hope this page about Santa Luzia in Tavira Region is useful for our Holiday rentals seekers.

Against a backdrop of light and beauty, Santa Luzia stands before the blues of the sky and sea. With 430 hectares, this is the smallest parish in the municipality and has 1,455 inhabitants. Located about 2 kilometers from Tavira, this village carries in its essence the customs and knowledge of the people of the sea.

According to the records, Santa Luzia was born in 1577,
at the initiative of the fishermen, when they built a chapel dedicated to a saint with the same name, a Sicilian martyr and protector of those who suffer from the eyes. Santa Luzia thus became the patron saint of the parish.

The history of the village has always been linked to the sea. Initially through fishing by hooks and hook and,
from 1842 until the middle of the 20th century, with the appearance of the Barril framework, by means of tuna coping. As of 1927, fishermen began to devote themselves to fishing for octopus with rumps and creels, which contributed to the fact that Santa Luzia is still considered the “capital of the octopus”.

Years later, more specifically,
on December 29, 1984, this village, previously integrated in the parish of Santiago, was elevated to parish headquarters, having become a village in 1999.

Today, still of a fishing nature, this parish also lives by betting on tourism, with quality accommodation, restaurants and beaches. Designated as the “capital of the octopus”,
Santa Luzia provides all visitors with moments of harmony and well-being.

Enjoy the life of this village and the fishing gear that coexist in an environment in harmony with the tourism and hospitality of the Santaluzienses.
